This morning's pop culture class- excellent and shiny simply because we chatted about Fan Culture. For two hours. We talked about Trekkies. And Gaters. And the fact that Prof. K has no idea what is going on on Desperate Housewives. And slash. Did I mention we talked about Slash? And the fact that the book from which our reading was taken had a sexually explicit excerpt from a fic? I am tempted to see if I can get it from the library as I liked very much how it was written. And the fact that it has Star Trek fanart as the cover. Then we talked more about slash and gender changing like in Sailor Moon and in Ranma. Yep, Prof. K turns to me and says "Like Ranma 1/2. Perhaps, Nikki, you could explain it." So I did- about the springs and body changes. The class found it quite funny. Oh Ranma, how you amuse me you demon! Then someone in my class said that they had seen a documentary on how, in Asian pornography/animated hentai, there are far more man/man films than any other, including of course het and lesbians. I said it was female fantasy, wanting to see two very prettty men. I think we should talk more about fan culture. We didn't even really get into cosplaying or 'zines all that much.

And I can;t decide that the fact that this book has a Spock/Data slash fic in it disturbs me to no end or intrigues me. Questions, questions...
